On Friday June 27 Christiana Fire Company received more wonderful grant news as we have been awarded a FY2013 Regional Assistance to Firefighters Grant to aid in the purchase of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) for 4 local fire companies.

Once again, our grant writer John Sly came through with the proposal to purchase enough AEDs to equip each of our apparatus with a life saving defibrillator, in case the unfortunate situation would arise that required the usage of a defibrillator not only for the public, but for the safety of our firefighters as well.

Cardiac related issues continue to be the leading cause of firefighter fatalities each year in the United States. This grant will ensure that we will have an AED available on each piece of apparatus and additional funding will allow for the installation of a permanent AED in each fire station.

The other companies participating in this grant who will share in the funds include Paradise & Leaman Place Fire Company, Strasburg Fire Company, and Kinzer Fire Company.

We will receive $33,750 in Federal funds and our departments will be required to meet a 10% match in the amount of $3,750.

This award marks the eighth Federal grant Christiana Fire Company has received from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program since 2004.
